      Below is a list of radiology courses recognized by the American Academy of Oral and
 Maxillofacial Radiology for people who already have dental degrees.

                                         Graduate Studies in Oral and
                                         Maxillofacial Radiology 
                                         at the Univershy of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 
                                         
                                              The Department of Diagnostic Sciences, Oral Radiology
                                         Section, at the University of  North Carolina-Chapel Hill offers 
                                         a three year post-doctoral  program leading to a Masters of
                                         Science degree conferred by the
                                         Graduate School of the University. The program prepares qualified
                                         oral and maxillofacial radiology specialists for positions
                                         of responsibility in institutions  of higher dental education, research,
                                          or in the private practice setting. Participants gain experience
                                           in oral and maxillofacial radiologic practice including,
                                         TMJ and implant imaging; acquire background information in
                                         radiation physics, biology and   protection, and imaging sciences;
                                          and enhance teaching and  research skills. Graduate students
                                           participate in the  School's digital imaging laboratory on a wide
                                           variety of research topics in addition to  completion of their own Master's
                                         thesis. Upon completion of all  requirements each student is
                                          eligible for examination by the  American Board of Oral and
                                         Maxillofacial Radiology. 
                                         
      This program may be combined with other educational programs in the basic sciences,
 health physics, education or epidemology leading to a doctoral degree. The length of the
 combined program will be determine jointly by the two departments. There is extensive
 training in oral pathology as well as hospital based radiology experiences. 
 
      Formal coursework is concentrated in the first two years of the program. During this time
       the students will select a research topic and initiate the project. The third year involves
 teaching, research, patient care, and completion of the thesis and manuscripts for publication
  in the area of oral and maxillofacial radiology.
