Message from the President

First, I would like to compliment Professor Hajime Fuchihata, our President-Elect/Newsletter
Editor on the excellent appearance and archival quality of our Newsletter,
and to thank the many contributors for their work on behalf of the IADMFR.
Second, I want to thank Professor Dr. F. Sitzmann for agreeing to permit the Board of
Directors and Executive Committee of the IADMFR to hold its ad interim in conjunction
with the 5th European Congress on Dental and Maxillo-Facial Radiology in Cologne,
November 8-11, 1995. This is, of course, the CENTENARY CONGRESS and I would like
to encourage all of our members to participate in this most historic of meetings. Not only
will you be treated to excellent scientific presentations, but you will also be able to visit the
birth place of Wilhelm Conrad R”entgen almost exactly l00 years after the discovery that
has provided each of us with an occupation.
The membership drive for growth of the IADMFR will certainly be enhanced by the
new emphasis on regional meetings, not only in Europe but also in Africa, Asia and Latin
America. Following Cologne, you should mark your calendar for February-March, 1996
when Professor Chris Nontj‚ will host the first African Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.
For everyone in the Northern Hemisphere this is a chance to get away from Winter
and greet the "Mediterranean" climate of the Cape. You will experience one of the most
beautiful landscapes in the world in this most colorful of nations. For those interested in
historic sites, Cape Town is second to no city. It is rich in culture as well as picturesque in
nature. Following the meeting in Cape Town, there will be the first Asian Congress in
Tokyo and plans are also afoot for the first Latin American Regional meeting to be hosted by
Brazil in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of that Country's Society of Oral and
Maxillofacial Radiology. Perhaps the new regionalism will eventually lead to fundamental
structural changes within our Association to enfanchise each sector in its own manner of
selecting representatives and officers.
Exciting activities are under way by our standing committees. Professor Madeline Rohlin
has orchestrated a fine team to carry out a most comprehensive study of educational
standards in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology which will include postdoctoral training in
our discipline. Professor Tomohiro Okano's committee is busy investigating global needs to
develop an international research agenda for Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. He is
including representatives from regions that are generally under represented in terms of
scholarly publication. Hopefully, this activity will determine areas of research that are of
value to our members' served populations that might have been neglected in the past.
I wish to thank Professor Bob Langlais for his staunch efforts towards completing the
process of developing various certificates of recognition, logos and official seals. Thanks to
his efforts you will also be able to purchase various items showing your membership of the
IADMFR. These will include lapel pins, and perhaps plaques, scarves and ties. A booth
carrying these items is planned for the 11th Congress in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. Peter Hirschmann, our Editor, has been busy on our behalf in terms of administering
changes in our Journal, Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, during the unanticipated merger of
Butterworth-Heinemann with Elsevier. This has resulted in several changes in the managing
staff allocated to the Journal. Peter is in process of increasing the number of issues of
the Journal from four to five in the near future. Eventually, the publication will be
bimonthly. You are encouraged to submit publishable research findings and scientifically
treated series of cases utilizing radiologic analyses to Peter for consideration by his
Editorial Board and team of reviewers. Thank you Peter.
As a final remark, I would like to request that each and everyone of you recruit at least
one new member to our Association this year. By increasing our membership we all gain a
louder voice as Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology is seen to be a greater force in health
care delivery.

Wishing you and your family the best of health and happiness.
