The
4th Asian Congress of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology was held from
June 14 through June 16, 2002 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, chaired by Professor
Li-Min Lin. Previous meetings were held in Japan (Tokyo), Korea (Seoul)
and China (Beijing). Prof. Lin together with Secretary General Yat-Hang
Yan and many others managed to present a perfectly organized meeting
with 166 participants from 8 countries. All the scientific sessions
started with 30-minute special lectures dealing with the theme of
that session, followed by the common short presentations. In total
33 presentations and 7 special lectures were given. In the poster
sessions 52 posters were presented. Professors Anonknart Bhakdinaronk
(professor Ana), Takashi Kaneda, Kaoru Kobayashi, Xu-Chen
Ma, Chang-Seo Park and Ding-Kwo Wu gave the special lectures. Special
lectures, presentations and posters were all of a very high scientific
and informative level. Although an Asian meeting, the congress language
was English, as the languages of the different nations differ too
much to use one of the Asian languages.
During
the General Assembly the regulations of the ACOMFR were amended and
elections on new board members and year and hosting of future meetings
were held. It was decided that the future meetings would be held in
a two-year cycle. These dates are in-between the two year cycle congresses
of the IADMFR. Prof. Anonknart Bhakdinaronk was elected president for
the next two years and she will be responsible for the organization
of the 5th congress to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, 15-17 December
2004. Two years later in 2006, the 6th congress will be held in India.
No
conference is complete without a social programme and this was no exception.
In fact the social program is in a way more important than the scientific
contents of the congress. During the social events one can meet old
friends, make new ones, strengthen contacts and of course do networking.
The receptions were just as the congress very well cared for and all
enjoyed the extensive and delicious Chinese banquets on two evenings.
Singing is an important part of these festivities.
Kaohsiung,
in the southern part of Taiwan, is one of the largest cargo centers
of the world and is an international harbor city but it is also
located in a beautiful part of the country not far from the Kenting
National Park. This beautiful park was amongst others a destination
in the post congress tour. We were taken by bus to marvelously scenic
spots along the coast, the park, and were able to explore temples,
and generally enjoy a day relaxing in each other's company. The
5th ACOMFR is a must for all Asians interested in the field of DMFR
and a strong recommendation for those not living in this part of
the world.
