EDITORIAL
I am concluding my term as Editor of the Newsletter of the International Association of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. To being able to edit the last four issues of this important publication was very pleasing and rewarding, and we can only say that we took that responsibility with great honour.
I hope we have fulfilled the membership’s expectations as well as to have added a little to the betterment of the Association’s informative medium.
I can not forget to acknowledge the participation of the other members of the Newsletter Committee on this journey, without whom I would not be able to accomplish my task. They are Drs. Irmela Reuter, Gerard Sanderink, William Scarf, and Murillo Abreu Jr.
On behalf of the Newsletter Committee, I express my gratitude to the members of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and to all other IADMFR members for the attention we had and for sending us invaluable contributions to the Newsletter.
By the
time you receive the present issue of the Newsletter it will almost
be time to pack your clothes and fly to Glasgow. We would like
to wish success to Drs. Douglas J. Lovelock, President of the Association,
and Dr. Laetitia Brocklebank, Vice-President, on the realization of the
13th Congress of IADMFR.
We look
forward to meeting our old friends again, and to make new ones, while we
taste the best whisky in the world.
Our gratitude
to you all and best wishes to the new Editor of the Newsletter. We hope
he/she receives the same cooperation we had the honour to receive.
Thank you very much,

Douglas Lovelock
President of I A D M F R |
We are looking forward to welcoming you to Glasgow for the 13th International Congress of DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology in august. The Congress Secretary General, Laetitia Brocklebank, is giving you an update elsewhere in this newsletter, so I will not repeat the same things here.
All of
the U.K. Organising Committee are working hard to ensure that you have
a most enjoyable Congress. With over 200 abstracts, and several plenary
lectures, there will be plenty of science for you. I promise that we have
not neglected the social programme either as we
wish you to remember Glasgow
2001 for many years to come.
You will be pleased to hear that there is no Foot and Mouth disease within 70 miles [110 km.] of Glasgow. So please do not worry. Also, there have been hardly any new cases reported in the last four weeks. Visitors are asked not to bring any meat products into U.K. at present, so you may be asked about this on arrival.
This will be my final message to you as your President. For those of you who I will not be able to thank personally in Glasgow, thank you for your support of IADMFR; without its members there would be no Association.
My congratulations are extended to Edemir Costa and Murillo Abreu for all of the hard work that they have carried out on the Newsletter. I also wish them a most successful two years climaxing in the 14th Congress in Brasil.
The Board of Directors and its Constitution and Byelaws Committee have been debating ways of improving representation of members worldwide, and improving communication with the membership.
The following proposal is submitted for consideration by the General Assembly of IADMFR in Glasgow on 7th August 2001:
1] Every
country that has members of IADMFR elects a NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE
to act as co-ordinator for the Association in that country.
2] Any
country with more than 50 members of IADMFR may elect TWO national
representatives.
3] National
Representatives shall be elected for 2/3 or 4/6 years [depending on 2 or
3 year Congress cycle], and shall be eligible for re-election.
4] At
each International Congress of DMFR there will be a joint meeting of National
Representatives and the Board of Directors.
5] The
Board of Directors of IADMFR shall consist of:
a) The
Officers of IADMFR
b) One
elected COUNCELLOR from each of the following regions:
Africa
Australasia
Eastern
Asia
Europe
North
America
South
America
Western
Asia and the Middle East
6] The
COUNCELLORS to be elected by:
- the
National Representatives or
-the
General Assembly to be decided by General Assembly.
7] Councellors
will be elected for 2/3 years, and will be eligible for re-election
for a second term of office. After 4/6 years in office, a Councellor would
not be eligible for re-election for
a further period of
2/3 years.
Please give these proposed changes some thought before the General Assembly. If you have any comments to make on these proposed changes, and are unable to attend the General Assembly, please contact me directly - details below.

4- 8 August 2001
Greetings to you all from Glasgow in Bonnie Scotland. I started to write this in February, watching the snow falling outside my window. But Spring is now here, and I am filled with warmth and optimism for the Congress. That week in early February was exceptionally exciting for me, as I watched the abstract numbers grow from 50 on the Friday pre-deadline to 157 on deadline day and around 200 just a few days later! What a response – thank you all very much. I have never been involved in an international meeting before and so I had no real idea what to expect – but his surpasses what expectations I had. I can almost imagine you all sitting at your computers, with our web-site open in front of you, filling in the sections one by one and then finally pressing “SUBMIT”. Those of you who are presenting either an oral or poster presentation will have received confirmation and, I hope, registered by now, as the early Registration Deadline will be passed by the time you receive this Newsletter.
We have been approached by a couple of members who wish to have a small site to demonstrate some software they have developed. There may be more of you out there who would like the opportunity to do this as well as to share your developments with colleagues. If you are interested in this possibility then please contact me with some information about your development. We would only be able to provide you with a table and electricity supply; any computers, etc. would have to be provided by you. This facility will only be available for members, and where there is no commercial aspect to the product. If you have a development which is marketed commercially then it would be more appropriate to consider taking a stand in the exhibition hall (if space is still available) and perhaps linking up with someone else to make this a realistic option. Any questions, please e-mail me.
Lilian Lovelock has asked me to remind you that we may be able to offer facilities to care for children during the day, provided there is sufficient demand. But we can only do this if we have plenty of notice. There is a space on the Registration form to tick, if you are interested. Lilian and the Secretariat will then see what can be arranged.
I was fortunate enough to spend an evening and night in the luxury of the Turnberry Hotel, immediately adjacent to the golf fairways. This hotel is in a magnificent setting and there is no doubt that it also offers great golf. David Still is looking forward to arranging a golf tournament on Thursday 9 August for those members and partners or friends who are interested – please tick the box on the Registration form.
This is a good opportunity to say something about registering. If you’ve already submitted an abstract on the web-site I am sure you will feel comfortable with registering the same way. For some of you this will be the first time you have done this, and you may be worried that you can’t see everything you have to fill in from the very beginning. Don’t worry – I’ve done it and it is very user friendly. You can stop and cancel the transaction at any time up to the last moment. The information needed is the same as on the printed form that was distributed with the Second Announcement. Once Concorde receive your registration they will issue you with a delegate number and send you written confirmation of your booking – it is very important that you bring this with you to the Congress, in order to collect your registration pack. They will then write to you again nearer the time with information to help you on your arrival in Glasgow and in planning the remainder of your visit to Scotland.
We are very pleased with the number of registrations we have had so far, and looking forward to a varied, intellectually stimulating and enjoyable Congress. Details of the invited speakers were included in the Second Announcement and on the web. We also have a very good Trade Exhibition which is located quite close to the Scientific Presentation rooms. Coffee will be served in this area, and the Welcome Party will be located within the Exhibition to give delegates an opportunity to start to examine what is on offer, whilst at the same time re-meeting old friends. Details of the Companies who have confirmed their space are on the web, and for those of you without Internet access reproduced here:
Cook (UK) Ltd, Dentsply Ltd, Fiad & Clark Dental, Instrumentarium Imaging, Kodak, Medivance Instruments, Minerva Dental Ltd, J Morita Corporation Ltd, Orion Corporation SOREDEX, Planmeca.
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you soon in Glasgow!

HUGO DAGUM
Regional Director South America |
Ever since September 2000, a small group of specialists in oral radiology have gathered all of the dentists of the country who exercise the speciality whether full or part time, in order to form the Sociedad Argentina de Radiologia Odontologica (SARO), Argentine Society of Dental Radiology.
We are working very hard, taking into account that Argentina is an extense country (about 2,300,000 km2) and we have achieved this important task on this 5th day of the month of may 2001 in the Organizational Meeting carried out in the city of Buenos Aires. With a hundred of new members and with the hope of future duplication of the number of colleague members, the by-laws were approved and the first Executive Committee was chosen. Same is composed as follows:
PRESIDENT Dr. Hugo DAGUM
VICEPRESIDENT Dr. Eduardo
L. PALADINI
SECRETARY Dr. Jose L. SOENGAS
TREASURER Dr. Myriam E.
MICHELLI
In the perfomance of other executive offices:
Dr. Jose SOENGAS
Dr. Beatriz A. M. MARTINEZ
Dr. Maria E. MARTINEZ
Dr. Edith MILAT
Dr. Cesar J. TAMBELLA
Dr. Jorge A. PEREZ IBAÑEZ
Dr. Carlos E. GALLARDO
Dr. Elia BARBAZAN
Said Committee takes over the organization of the IV LATIN AMERICAN MEETING OF ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY, which will take place on the month of June of the year 2002, in the city of Buenos Aires.
It is our will that this first step to organize radiology in our country shall be of benefit for everyone, since there will be representation before the authorities of health in Argentine and this way we will be able to approach IADMFR to them.
We will probably discuss about the aforementioned topic at the meeting of the Board of Directors in August in Glasgow, Scotland.
My best regards to all IADMFR members.
Sincerely yours,

Hello
there to all, from the great south land, Australia.
It is
with regret that one has to inform IADMFR members that the Australian Academy
is in the process of being wound up. Some of the money will be held in
trust by our Accountants/Auditors for a period of time to provide seeding
capital should another acceptable
group be found.
The remainder
of our capital has been evenly divided between The Royal Australian &
New Zealand College of Radiologists (A&NZCR) and the Australian Institute
of Radiographers (AIR) (Medical Imaging) ......to be placed into
their education funds.
There
are only four OMF Radiologists actually Registered with the Dental Boards
within Australia at present but many other clinicians at various stages
over the past 10 years have had interest in the AADMFR group with
membership at times being
in the 40’s. But during the past 4 years we have struggled to get (and
didn’t) a Constitutional quorum for any Annual meetings and we have also
had to cancel 2 conferences in our history because
of lack of support. Thus
the 3 Directors had to make that hard decision to close down the Academy.
Two OMFR’s who are Members of the IADMFR (Drs. Paul Monsour and Ross Macdonald) who are associate Members of The RA&NZCR, have been invited to form a special interest group within the RA&NZCR. This group is headed by Dr. A. Whyte as the Chairperson. And note should be made of Dr A. Whyte, who is chair of the RA&NZCR OMFR Special Interest Group who has the following qualifications: BDS(Hons), MBBS, FRCR, FRA&NZCR, Dipl. OMFR RCR. (some will know of him in the UK...note Dipl OMFR RCR).
The group is charged by the College with the task of organizing and running specific training courses in OMFR for medical radiologists and medical imaging technologists, and the first will be a 3 day conference in Perth ,Western Australia, in September 2001.
I (RM) cannot be in Glasgow for the Congress, but I send my personal best wishes to all for a successful gathering and a special “Hello” to all my friends. It is a pity I cannot return to my heritage origins and say my prayers at Cullodin, but Macdonald of Clanranald will be thinking of you all at the Congress.
Sincerely
Ross Macdonald

This year the 15th Nordic Symposium in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology was planned to be given in Turku, Finland in the beginning of June. Unfortunately, the number of participants was too low and therefore the meeting has been cancelled. There are probably too many conferences and this year the Glasgow meeting is ranked as no. 1. I feel sorry for the organisers of the Nordic meeting and I really hope that the Nordic meetings can continue in some way in the future.
This report will continue with information from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The summaries of three Odont.dr. dissertations are given below. Professor Hans-Göran Gröndahl also informs that Richard L. Webber has been designated as honorary doctor at the University of Gothenburg and the formal act will take place in Gothenburg, October 20 this year.
The following two dissertations have recently been defended and the last one by Agneta Lith is defended May 18, 2001.
Annika Ekestubbe (1999):
“Conventional spiral
and low-dose computed mandibular tomography in dental implant planning”.
Comparisons of radiation
dose and image quality in pre-implant conventional hypocycloidal, conventional
spiral and computed tomography (CT) showed that conventional spiral tomography
is to be preferred over reformatted CT and when CT is the only technique
at hand, it can be performed with a lowered radiation dose.
Eva Borg (1999):
“Some characteristics
of solid-state and photo-stimulable phosphor detectors for intra-oral radiography”.
Different solid-state
and systems for digitalt intra-oral radiography were evaluated concerning
physical characteristics, psychophysical performance, and subjective image
quality. Some differences were found between the different systems concerning
physical and psychophysical performances. All systems produced diagnostically
acceptable image quality; the photo-stimulable phosphor systems over a
much wider exposure range than the solid-state systems.
Agneta Lith (2001):
“Frequency of Radiographic
Caries Examinations and Development of Dental Caries”
Retrospective studies of
serial (age 6-19) bitewing radiographs from 514 patients showed that in
populations with low caries prevalence a restrictive attitude towards operative
treatment of proximal lesions can be consistent with, on the average, prolonged
intervals between radiographic examinations. Provided individually based
radiographic scheduling and extensive preventive no increased need of endodontic
treatment seems to result.

There is little to report
from this side of the ocean. We are excitedly looking forward to the next
international meeting that takes place in Glasgow this year. We send salutations
to the many people who are preparing for this meeting. Having been involved
in the arrangements of such a meeting in a very small way, I recognize
the vast amount of work
that such a meeting entails.
I know the people who are arranging this meeting and thus, I can guarantee
all the congress goers that this will be a mostsuccessful meeting from
every aspect. Many of these same people were involved in the arrangements
for the IADMFR Congress that took place in London about 20 years ago and
the oldies amongst us, will recall what a great meeting that was.
Here in
the US we are preparing for the next annual scientific meeting of the American
Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. As there will be people from
the rest of the world who will be attending this meeting,
and one requires to plan
well in advance for these meetings, I will record the place and the date
of our next meeting. The Annual Session will be at the Benson Hotel in
Portland, Oregon from October 3 -7. Please accept
this as a personal invitation
to attend the meeting.
If any one requires more information about the meeting here in the US, please feel free to contact me at njs2@columbia.edu or Dr. Kevin O’Carroll.
