The period
from 1999 to 2001 has shown a consolidation of the activities innitiated at
the Congress in Louisville. Most activities and tasks of the Secretariat are
now better defined. In particular the contacts with the members are running
smoothly. At present nearly all members of the Board of Directors (33 out
of 35) do have access to the Internet. It is the fastest way to communicate
within an International Organization as regular mail takes up to 4-6 weeks
and mailing costs are reduced considerably. The Listserver for the Board members
to communicate and to discuss Association matters is used more frequently.
The IADMFR website is also becoming more popular. In the past two years more
than 7000 visitors were registered. The site contains information of all Officers,
Directors of the IADMFR and Committees including addresses and email links.
It also links to the site of the 13th Congress in Glasgow, the FOCUS website
in Gothenburg (Sweden), Nature Publishing group and the publisher of our Journal.
The website contains all Newsletters in digital format since 1995. The online
application form for membership is frequently used and more than 90% of all
new applications for membership arrive through the Internet.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
Membership renewal can be done following the instructions in the dues notice.
At present the option to do the renewal through the Internet is under investigation.
Until now no problems occurred sending credit card information to our address.
I advise all of you to continue your membership for a period of three years
instead of a one-year period. Annual payments result in much higher bank costs
for the Secretariat and additional paper work for the Office. Members using
the annual payment pay 20% more than those who make use of the tri-annual
payment procedure.
We are very grateful to Mrs. Yvonne Emmer who takes care of the membership
administration and other common business of the Secretariat. Please contact
her in case you need help or any information.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION
After the meeting in Osaka new leaflets for membership application were printed.
Although most new applications arrive through the internet this leaflet can
also be used as a flyer to promote the Association. In the leaflet a reference
is found to the website to make use of the quick and efficient electronic
application. Members who want to receive leaflets to recruit new members please
contact the Secretariat. At the moment we have a quite stable number of 600
members. This is a small drop compared to 1999 and 1997 where we had 630 members.
In both years we had an International meeting. Asia, Europe, and North and
South America are the regions with the largest numbers of members. The numbers
in the Asian region decreased slightly particularly in Korea there was a considerable
drop in members. Detailed figures can be found in the graphs and tables. Although
the number of members are more or less constant every year approximately 50
members did not renew their membership.
IADMFR FELLOWSHIP
In Osaka (1999) three Fellowships were granted. The new Fellows are Prof.
W.D. McDavid, Prof. O. Langland and Prof. T. Schiff. In Glasgow (2001) Prof.
Neill Serman became a new Fellow.
Individual members who are eligible for a Fellowship do have to apply themselves
or be recommended by other colleagues. Requirements for eligibility and procedure
can be found in the May 2000 Newsletter or at the IADMFR website. If you need
further information please contact the Office of the Secretariat.
IADMFR RESEARCH AWARD
The first IADMFR Research Award was presented in Glasgow (2001). The first
prize is $7500 and the second prize $2500. The criteria and procedures for
future prizes can be found on the IADMFR website. Please inform your postgraduate
students or junior faculty members within 5 years of graduation about this
prize. The next opportunity to apply for this prize will be in 2003 at the
Congress in Florianópolis (Brazil).
